Introduction to Adding Integers

Football players during an active play on the field What were the running back's total yards for the game?
In sports, the final score isn't the only thing that matters. We can also gather stats to measure the performance of individual players or teams. In football, for example, a running back might gain and lose yards throughout the game. If a running back gained [latex]8[/latex] yards, lost [latex]6[/latex] yards, gained [latex]3[/latex] yards, lost [latex]10[/latex] yards, gained [latex]25[/latex] yards, and then lost [latex]2[/latex] yards in a game, what were his total yards for the game? To figure this out, you'll need to add integers.

Learning Outcomes

By the end of this section, you will be able to:
  • Model addition of integers
  • Simplify expressions with integers
  • Evaluate variable expressions with integers
  • Translate word phrases to algebraic expressions
  • Add integers in applications
Before you get started in this module, try a few practice problems and review prior concepts.
