Summary: Using the Commutative and Associative Properties

Key Concepts

  • Commutative Properties
    • Commutative Property of Addition:
      • If a,ba,b are real numbers, then a+b=b+aa+b=b+a
    • Commutative Property of Multiplication:
      • If a,ba,b are real numbers, then ab=baa\cdot b=b\cdot a
  • Associative Properties
    • Associative Property of Addition:
      • If a,b,ca,b,c are real numbers then (a+b)+c=a+(b+c)\left(a+b\right)+c=a+\left(b+c\right)
    • Associative Property of Multiplication:
      • If a,b,ca,b,c are real numbers then (ab)c=a(bc)\left(a\cdot b\right)\cdot c=a\cdot \left(b\cdot c\right)
