Introduction: Operations With Rational Expressions

Why perform mathematical operations on rational expressions?

As we've moved through this course, we've been focusing on different aspects of the order of operations and how they apply to a wide range of mathematical expressions.  We continue that here as we learn about rational expressions, which have unique behaviors and are used to model many relationships. Because they have unique behaviors, it helps to isolate rational expressions and learn how mathematical operations apply to them. In this lesson you will learn how to do the following:
  • Define and simplify rational expressions
  • Identify the domain of a rational expression
  • Multiply and divide rational expressions
  • Add and subtract rational expressions
  • Simplify complex rational expressions

The learning activities for this outcome include:

  • Read: Define and Simplify Rational Expressions
  • Self-Check: Define and Simplify Rational Expressions
  • Read: Add and Subtract Rational Expressions
  • Self-Check: Add and Subtract Rational Expressions
  • Read: Multiply and Divide Rational Expressions
  • Self-Check: Multiply and Divide Rational Expressions
  • Read: Complex Rational Expressions
  • Self-Check: Complex Rational Expressions
